The Shell Stitch is such a pretty stitch! It was a little tricky for me back when I first started crocheting but once I understood the stitch, it got easier.
So, I hope this stitch video tutorial is helpful. I used it to make a baby blanket and I will include the pattern in this post however it's pretty much just working the Shell Stitch in a larger scale.
I did add one last row to straighten the finished edge but it is not included in the stitch video tutorial. This pattern explains how to complete the last row below. I did not add a border around it.
MATERIALS
Super Bulky Weight yarn | 3 Cakes | Yarnspiration Caron Sprinkle Cakes
10mm Crochet Hook | I'm using a handmade hook from Art of Siberia
Tapestry Needle
Scissor
ABBREVIATIONS
ch - Chain
sl st - Slip Stitch
st(s) - Stitch(es)
sc - Single Crochet
sk - Skip
dc - Double Crochet
rep – Repeat
Measurement of Blanket: 26" x 26"
PATTERN
ch 74 OR in multiples of 6 sts, plus 2
Row 1: 1sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, *sk 2 sts, 5dc into the next st, sk 2 sts, 1 sc in next st* rep from * to * to end.
Row 2: ch3 (counts as a dc st), 2dc sts in the same st, *sk 2 sts, 1 sc in next st, sk 2 sts, 5dc into the next st.* rep from * to * until last st. Work only 3dc sts in the LAST st instead of 5 (to match the beginning of the row).
Row 3: ch1, 1sc in the same st, *sk 2 sts, 5dc into the next st, sk 2 sts, 1 sc in next st* rep from * to * to end.
Repeat Rows 2 & 3 until desired size.
You can choose to leave the edges in the shell shape when you complete or you can straighten it out so it's flat to match the starting chain side.
Depending on which row you stopped on:
Ending after Row 2: ch1, 1sl st in the same st, *1sc, 1hdc, 1dc, 1hdc, 1sc, 1s sl st.* Rep from * to * across.
Ending after Row 3: ch3 *1hdc, 1sc, 1sl st, 1sc, 1hdc, 1dc.* Rep from * to * across.
That's it! I've made mermaid blankets, beanies and blankets with this stitch. I just LOVE it!

TY for the instructions for finishing the shell edge to a flat edge. You saved me. I was making a similar shell blanket and forgot how to finish the edge, but the other designer's pattern did not include directions. Very easy. Beautiful colors on your blanket.
Thanks for the great video on the shell stitch blanket! One question...I've just completed the first 74 chain stitches and the length is about 38" however, the pattern states that it makes a 26" x 26" blanket. Does the 38" chain shrink to 26" when I start stitching the shells into it? Please confirm the finished blanket dimensions. Thanks!
