I am collaborating with Scott from Adze Woodcraft to bring you a free pattern & video tutorial! I've seen all his beautiful hooks online but when I received one of his hooks in the mail, I was so excited to open the package. I wanted to rip it open but of course, I carefully opened the package (all giddy too).
The Ellie Cowl is a simple cowl made using any even number of stitches and worked in the round. Instead of coming up with a new design, I decided to use the same stitches I used for my Crochet Ellie Cardigan (released earlier this summer)... and named it the Ellie Cowl.
This free cowl pattern is very easy to adjust. You can make any size you want. You can even use different weight yarn with the recommended hook size on yarn label. Just remember that you need an even number of stitches.
Supplies:
Worsted Weight Yarn | I used Red Heart's Super Saver in the color Reef & Caron Simply Soft "Tweeds" in Gray Heather
5.5mm Crochet hook | Adze Woodcraft
Scissors
Yarn Needle
Tape Measure
ABBREVIATIONS
ch – Chain
st(s) – Stitch(es)
sl st – Slip Stitch
sk - Skip
dc – Double Crochet
Pattern notes: The chain 3 at the beginning of rounds counts as a double crochet stitch. This pattern is measured for sizing but as an example, I started with 62 double crochet sts which measures 10" across (approx 20" circumference). I have a total of 15 rounds measuring 9" tall for the Reef & 13 rounds measuring 6.5" for the Gray Heather.
ELLIE COWL
I recommend starting with a Foundation Double Crochet (FDC). Click here for FDC the tutorial. If you just cannot get it right with the FDC or just prefer to do the regular chain foundation, then continue on to the "Foundation" instructions.
FDC: Work any even number of FDC sts. (First ch3 does not count as a st). sl st to first dc st careful not to twist work.
OR
Foundation: ch any even number of sts for the desired circumference. sl st to first ch st careful not to twist work. ch3, 1dc into each st around. sl st into the 3rd ch of the ch3.
Round 2: ch3, 1dc into the st to the right of the ch st (last st of the round). *sk a st, 1dc into the next. 1dc into the skipped st. Repeat from * around.
Round 3: ch3, 1dc into each st around. sl st into the 3rd ch of the ch3.
Repeat Rounds 2 & 3 until you get the desired height of Cowl. That's it! Fasten off and weave in ends!
