Hi Friends! Today's Pattern is all Halloween! I LOVE Halloween! I used to go all out (before kids) but especially now that COVID has been such an issue, things have slowed down a lot! Hopefully this Halloween-themed Beanie will give you a bit of Halloween spirit this year!
I decided to design the same beanie in knit and crochet versions. I wanted to point out a couple of things in regards to the crochet version. The crochet beanie uses the Waistcoat Stitch which is much more dense than the traditional single crochet stitches. If you find that your beanie is too stiff, try using a softer yarn, go up hook sizes, or use lighter weight yarn. You can adapt this Chunky version for any weight yarn simply measuring as you go.
I used K&C's Alpaca Solids (previously Buttercream). Other substitutions I recommend are Big Twist, Natural Blend, Lion Brand's Hometown USA 100% acrylic yarn and Lion Brand's Wool Ease Thick and Quick, a wool blend.

Instructions | In US Terms
Sizes: Adult (pdf pattern for multiple sizes)
BRIM | Smaller hook size
Foundation (mc): Ch8 (or as tall as you want your brim). 1sl st into the 2nd ch from the hook and into each ch across. Ch1 and turn (7 sts)
Row 1 (mc): 1sl st tbl in the first st and every st across. Ch1 and turn (7 sts)
Repeat row 1 until desired circumference ending on the same side as the beginning tail. Measure brim while slightly stretched. You want the brim snug but not over stretched.
Seaming the brim
Align the 2 short ends together. Work a sl st through the “chain” end of the brim and through the back loops of the other end of the brim. Flip brim right side out so the seam is on the inside.
BODY | Switch to larger hook size
Set up round: Ch1, work sc sts evenly around the brim in multiples of 6. Join with a sl st to the 1st sc.
Round 1 (mc): Following the chart, ch1 & work the Waistcoat Stitch as follows: insert hook through the sc st from the last round inserting your hook in the post (between the “V” sts), yo, pull up a tall loop, yo, pull through 2 loops. Rep around. Do not join. You will now work in a continuous round. Place a marker on the first st of every round.
Changing colors: Insert hook through the post (between the “V” sts), yo with cc, pull up a tall loop, yo with mc, pull through 2 loops.
Rep working in a continuous round following the color chart until beanie measures approx. 8-9” or desired height. Measure from the bottom of the brim. Adjust slouch by working less/more rounds keeping in mind the decrease adds approx. 2-2.5”.
DECREASE
Continue using the waistcoat stitch.
Note: you can crochet 1 round of just sc sts between each decrease round for a more gradual decrease.
Round 1: 1sc in each of the next 4 sts, sc2tog. Rep from * around. Sc in any rem sts.
Round 2: 1sc in each of the next 3 sts, sc2tog. Rep from * around. Sc in any rem sts.
Round 3: 1sc in each of the next 2 sts, sc2tog. Rep from * around. Sc in any rem sts.
Round 4: 1sc in each of the next 4 sts, sc2tog. Rep from * around. Sc in any rem sts.
Round 5: Rep row 4 working regular single crochets (not waistcoat)
FINISHING
Fasten off leaving a long tail. Weave the tail through the sts using your tapestry needle. Pull tail to close. Secure and weave in all your ends.
